HCI International 2024

29 June - 4 July 2024 - Washington DC, USA

HCI International 2024, the 26th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, was held as a ‘hybrid’ event from 29 June to 4 July at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Washington DC, USA, under the auspices of 21 distinguished international boards of 504 Members from 49 Countries. The first three days of the conference comprised virtual only parallel sessions for paper presentations with remote only participation and hybrid tutorials and workshops. The Opening Plenary Session (on the 1st of July) and the parallel sessions for paper presentations (between 2-4 July) run as hybrid events, while the poster presentations and the exhibition (between 2-4 July) were held both in-person and remotely. This year, 2316 individuals (1441 virtual and 875 in person) from 69 countries participated in this truly international in scope event, where the work of world leaders in the field was presented.

The conference program included:

  • 15 tutorials
  • 3 workshops
  • 290 parallel sessions (139 virtual and 151 hybrid)

As established in previous years, twenty-two awards were conferred during the Opening Plenary Session. The awards, in the form of a plaque and a certificate, were presented to the author(s) of the Best Paper of each Thematic Area / Affiliated Conference and of the Best Poster.

Vicki Hanson (past President of ACM and current ACM’s Chief Executive Officer) joined us as the keynote speaker at the Opening Plenary Session. Her keynote entitled: "Technological Change for Improving Accessibility" was also her acceptance speech for the HCII 2024 award ‘HCI Medal for Societal Impact’.

In the context of the HCII 2024 Student Design Competition, a seven-member international committee acted as the jury and evaluated the accepted submissions (all of which were presented during the conference). Three awards were conferred during the Opening Plenary Session, each carrying a prize: the GOLD received $1,000 USD, the SILVER $500 USD and the BRONZE $250 USD.

Prof. Gavriel Salvendy (Major Professor to 68 PhD students) held a Mentoring Session for PhD students with the following important topics: Development of a high impact PhD Dissertation and its effective dissemination; transition from a PhD student to industry professional; and transition from a PhD student to successful Faculty.

A Students’ Reception and networking social event, complimentary for registered student participants, took place in the evening of the 3rd of July, offering students the opportunity to get together and exchange ideas in a truly international and multicultural setting.

The last day of the conference coincided with the US Independence Day (4th of July) and the 40th anniversary of the HCI International Conference. The organized celebration included the US traditional festivities of the day, complimentary for conference participants.

The HCII Conference has established a long-term collaboration with the World Usability Initiative (WUI), founded and directed by Elizabeth Rosenzweig. The 2023 World Usability Initiative (WUI) Design Challenge with theme "Collaboration and Cooperation" award winners were announced on World Usability Day, 9 November 2023. The Design Challenge Awards (Gold $1,250; Silver $1,000; and Honorable Mention $750), sponsored by the HCII2024 Conference, were conferred during the Opening Plenary Session. The three award winners were invited, with complimentary registration, and presented their work in a special hybrid session on the 2nd of July.
