HCII 2020: The conference will be held as virtual event

The world is going through an unprecedented period of hardship and uncertainty as a result of the outbreak of the corona virus COVID-19 pandemic and our thoughts are with those affected. It was not possible for the HCII 2020 conference to escape the consequences of the counter-measures taken to avoid the spread of the disease.

As a result of the Danish government's announcement, dated 21 April 2020, to ban all large events (above 500 participants) until the 1st of September, the HCII 2020 conference cannot be held physically.

Overcoming challenges and difficulties, we are already working in order to transform HCII 2020 in a virtual format aiming to give the opportunity to our contributors / authors to present their work (papers and posters) and exchange ideas, using one of the widely used commercially available platforms. Further announcements of details regarding this ‘digital transformation’ of the conference will be made soon, through the conference website as well as via direct email communications to all registered participants. Regrettably, one of the consequences of this transformation is that the Student Design Competition, the Demonstrations, the Exhibition, the Tutorials program, as well as the HCII2020 Design Café had to be cancelled.

The conference proceedings will be published by Springer and will appear exactly as originally scheduled.

The format of the conference program will change, spreading the duration of the conference to six days (19-24 July 2020), now occupying also the period originally scheduled for the pre-conference tutorials that have been cancelled.  In this way, the daily load of the conference is reduced to four hours: two sessions, two-hours each. The conference will start and end at a different time each day; the conference program will allow participants from different time zones (75 countries around the world) to join the conference during time-periods which, for some of the time, are more convenient for them, taking into account the ‘time-zone’ of the presenters.

Keynote speech:

Professor Gregg Vanderheiden (University of Maryland, USA) will give the Keynote Speech during the Opening Plenary Session on Tuesday 21 July 2020, starting at 17:00 and ending at 18:00 Central European Time (CET). The title of his speech will be “Advancing technologies will allow to reinvent HCI - Can we use it to finally address digital interface inequality - with less effort - and to better effect?”

HCII 2020: There is still time to submit your work

There is still time for prospective conference participants to submit their work to be considered, following peer review, for on-line presentation and for publication in the ‘Late Breaking Work’ volumes (LNCS for papers and CCIS for posters) of the Springer proceedings to appear just after the conference. Following a fast-track peer-review process by at least two reviewers, the review decision is communicated to the authors typically within a week.

Following the digital transformation, the conference registration fee has been reduced by 50%.

Submit a PAPER proposal, as an extended abstract of 800 words corresponding to one of the Conference Thematic Areas and their topics. If accepted, the authors will be cordially invited to present their work online during the Conference, while their paper (full camera-ready papers, typically 12 pages but no less than 10 and no more than 20 pages) will be included in the "HCII 2020 - Late Breaking Papers" Springer LNCS Proceedings to be published just after the conference.

Submit a POSTER proposal, as an abstract of 300 words corresponding to one of the Conference Thematic Areas and their topics. If accepted, the authors will be cordially invited to present their work online during the Conference, while their ‘extended poster abstract’ in the form of short research paper (typically 6 pages but no less than 4 and no more than 8 pages, will be included in the "HCII 2020 - Late Breaking Posters" Springer CCIS Proceedings to be published just after the conference.

The timetable for both paper and poster submissions is:

  • Deadline for abstract submission: Open until 25 May 2020
  • Notification of review outcome: 1 week after submission
  • Deadline for camera-ready submission and registration: 15 June 2020

The Conference Proceedings will be published by Springer in a multi-volume set. Papers will appear in volumes of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) and Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. Poster Extended Abstracts will be published in the Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series.

Seminar: Abbas Moallem, UX Experts, LLC and San Jose State University, USA, will offer a seminar on “Cybersecurity and Privacy Awareness”. The seminar will be held, as scheduled, on Friday, 24 July 2020, at a time to be announced soon. Strong interest in open access paper from IJHCI - “Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence: Reliable, Safe & Trustworthy” by Ben Shneiderman

This paper has already garnered 3400+ downloads, indicating strong interest:

Future computer systems that amplify human abilities 1000-fold will skillfully blend HCI design with AI methods.  This powerful combination will enable high levels of human control AND high levels of automation. Ben Shneiderman (http://www.cs.umd.edu/~benhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Shneiderman), long a key figure in the HCII community, describes a Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence framework that liberates design thinking. His 2-dimensional framework, breaks out of the traditional 1-dimensional view by showing how creative user interface design allows high automated systems that remain in human control. The examples include familiar devices, such as thermostats, elevators, self-cleaning ovens, and cellphone cameras, as well as life critical applications, such as highly automated cars and patient controlled pain relief.

Seven HCI Grand Challenges - A White Paper published as an IJHCI article

A group of 32 experts involved in the community of the Human Computer Interaction International (HCII) Conference series have collaborated to investigate the grand challenges which arise in the current and emerging landscape of rapid technological evolution towards more intelligent interactive technologies. The result of this collaboration is an article published in the International Journal of Human Computer Interaction (IJHCI, Vol. 35 issue 14, pp. 1229-1269), identifying seven grand challenges: Human-Technology Symbiosis; Human-Environment Interactions; Ethics, Privacy and Security; Well-being, Health and Eudaimonia; Accessibility and Universal Access; Learning and Creativity; and Social organization and Democracy. The views and research priorities of this international interdisciplinary group of experts are summarized, reflecting different scientific perspectives, methodological approaches and application domains. Each identified Grand Challenge is analyzed in terms of concept and problem definition, main research issues involved, state of the art, associated emerging requirements and future research directions.
