HCII 2021: Held virtually - Thank you for your participation

HCI International 2021, the 23rd International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, was held from 24 to 29 July 2021, under the auspices of 21 distinguished international boards of 469 Members from 54 Countries. The conference was planned to be held at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Washington DC, USA, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with everyone’s health and safety in mind, HCII2021 was run as a virtual conference.

Over 2,150 individuals from 81 countries were registered to attend this year's conference.

The conference program was adapted to suit the needs of its virtual format. Parallel sessions and tutorials run concurrently over the six-day period (24-29 July 2021). In this way, the daily load of the conference was four hours (two sessions, two-hours each, with a half-hour break in-between).

HCII 2021 also hosted on 26 July an open (for registered conference participants) event on Human-Centered AI (https://www.cecs.ucf.edu/human-centered-ai/), organized by the Human Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) Working Group. The event featured four sessions with 24 presentations in total, and was very well attended and received by the Conference participants. This open event was followed on the next day by a closed Workshop (invited participants only) on HCAI Research priorities. The Workshop identified current ‘grand challenges’ which need to be addressed in order to ensure the human-centered design of AI technologies, and its results will be consolidated in a White Paper to be published in the International Journal of Human Computer Interaction (IJHCI).

The HCII 2021 conference was privileged to have Professor Michitaka Hirose (The University of Tokyo, Japan) joining us as the keynote speaker at the opening plenary session. His well-received speech was entitled: “Advances in VR Technology and the Post-Coronavirus Society”.

We would like to thank each and every one of the Conference participants for their valuable contribution towards the success of this Conference.

HCII 2021: Proceedings

The Conference Proceedings are published by Springer in the LNCS, LNAI and CCIS series and are available on-line through the SpringerLink Digital Library, readily accessible by all subscribing libraries around the world.

HCII 2021 also offered the option of “Late Breaking Work”, for both for papers and posters, with the corresponding volumes of the proceedings to be published after the Conference. Full papers have been included in the “HCII 2021 - Late Breaking Papers” volumes (LNCS series), while Poster Extended Abstracts have been included as short research papers in the “HCII 2021 - Late Breaking Posters” volumes (CCIS series). The “Late Breaking Work” volumes of the proceedings, currently under preparation, will also become available, all together forming the full set of the HCII 2021 Conference Proceedings. Springer also offers for sale all volumes, individually and as a full set (after completion), in soft cover, with a significant discount for authors.

HCII 2022: The conference will be held as a virtual event

A message from the General Chair:

Dear colleagues,

We regret to inform you that, with everyone’s health and safety in mind, HCII2022 will be organized and run as a virtual conference. Despite our intention to host the HCII 2022 conference in Gothenburg, Sweden, as a hybrid event, a variety of current restrictions coupled with the future uncertainty regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the organization of an international event of this size, have led to the inevitable decision to host HCII 2022 virtually. The ‘in-person’ conference in Gothenburg is postponed for June 2025.

Building on the invaluable experience in organizing and running the HCII 2020 and HCII 2021 conferences virtually, HCII 2022 will run as a richer virtual event, including Tutorials, a Student Design Competition and a variety of satellite events and networking activities (to be announced in due course).  The HCII Conference has also started a sponsorship and collaboration arrangement with the World Usability Day regarding its ‘Design Challenge’ awards.

Conference and Tutorial registration will be offered at 50% of the 'in-person' fees. In view of the circumstances, the Papers and Tutorials submission deadline (8th of October) has been extended to the 22nd of October.

Hosting the conference virtually can never be as good as an ‘in-person’ conference, as we lose the opportunity of ‘live networking’. So, we sincerely hope that the coronavirus situation will improve in time to allow us to meet each other again in Copenhagen, Denmark for HCII 2023.

We look forward to your active participation in the HCII2022 virtual conference, hoping it will be a fruitful and enjoyable experience for all.

Kind regards,
Constantine Stephanidis
General Chair, HCII2022
