HCI Community in Europe

The on-going paradigm shift towards a knowledge-intensive Information Society has brought about radical changes in the way people work and interact with each other and with information.


Since 2000, with the launch of the “eEurope – Information Society for All” initiative of the European Commission, the European Union (EU) has adopted a policy towards ensuring that all its citizens benefit from the changes the Information Society is bringing. This commitment is now further continued and enhanced in the i2010 (European Information society in 2010) initiative, which aims to provide an integrated approach to information society in the EU, covering regulation, research, and deployment and promoting cultural diversity, with the objective to ensure that Europe’s citizens, businesses and governments make the best use of ICTs in order to improve industrial competitiveness, support growth and the creation of jobs and to help address key societal challenges.


HCI plays a critical role in the context of the emerging Information Society, as citizens experience technology through their contact with the user interfaces of interactive products, applications and services. New perspectives, trends and insights enrich the design, implementation and evaluation of interactive software, necessitating new multidisciplinary and collaborative efforts. The new challenges that the field of HCI is now experiencing are addressed in Europe at the levels of research, education and the industry.


The Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme of the European Commission has placed considerable emphasis on the human- and social-oriented aspects of technology. A commitment in this direction was present in the Sixth Framework Programme for the period 2002-2006, and is expected to be further enhanced in the context of the Seventh Framework Programme, currently being elaborated. In the context of projects funded by the European Commission, important scientific and technological advances have been achieved. For example, a series of landmark research and development projects, that started in the middle 80's, has established knowledge, instruments and building blocks for supporting Universal Access by ensuring that interactive applications and services are developed by taking into account the needs and requirements of all target user groups, in potentially any context of use, thus introducing profound methodological and technological innovations in all aspects of the user interface development lifecycle, with a strong focus on individualized and personalized interaction. Another related line of research, under the name of “Disappearing Computer”, has addressed the concept of the disappearance of the computer into everyday objects and settings, and how this can lead to new ways of supporting and enhancing people's lives that go above and beyond what is possible with the traditional computer. Today, Europe is striving towards the overall vision of an Ambient Intelligence environment, capable of user-friendly interaction.


At an educational level, HCI has progressively acquired increasing importance and is currently taught in graduate and postgraduate courses (mainly in Computer Science degrees) in Universities throughout the European Union. In some countries, e.g., UK and The Netherlands, specialised Master Degrees in HCI topics or subtopics are also offered. Efforts are also being undertaken in order to enhance education and professional training in accessibility and Design for All.


Finally, Europe was also a pioneer and has a strong tradition in user–centered design and usability at an industry level. Many companies are active in these fields, and provide specialised services. Currently, the challenge that Europe faces in this respect is to improve existing and establish new mechanisms for technology transfer, in order to achieve better exploitation of recent research results in the HCI field.

HCI International 2007 – Submission of proposals is now open

The HCI International 2007 jointly with the affiliated Conferences, which are
held under one management and one Registration, invite you to Beijing, P.R.
China, to participate and contribute to the international forum for the
dissemination and exchange of up-to-date scientific information on theoretical, generic and applied areas of HCI through the following modes of communication: Plenary / Keynote Presentation(s), Parallel Sessions, Poster Sessions and Tutorials.


The Conference Proceedings will be published both in CD–ROM and a multi–volume book edition by Springer, Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (LNCS).


Abstract submission for Paper, Tutorial, and poster/demonstration contributions for HCI International 2007 and the affiliated Conferences is now open through the Conference Management System (CMS).


Prospective authors will need to create their individual account by filling-in an Account Signup Form with the CMS in order to proceed with abstract submission. Once they have created their account, they can login into the CMS and submit an abstract, view their submission(s), and update their account and contact information.


Registration to the Conference will also be available through the CMS at a later stage.

IEA International 2008

2nd International Conference on Applied Ergonomics 14–17 July 2008: Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, USA


You are cordially invited to participate in AE International 2008 and the affiliated HAAMAHA conference which are jointly held under one management and one registration. The conference objective is to provide an international forum for the dissemination and exchange of scientific information on theoretical, generic, and applied areas of ergonomics, including physical ergonomics, cognitive ergonomics, social and organizational ergonomics, ergonomics modeling and usability evaluation, healthcare and special populations, safety and ergonomics in manufacturing. This will be accomplished through the following six modes of communication: keynote presentation, parallel sessions, demonstration and poster sessions, tutorials, exhibitions and meetings of special interest groups. The four-day conference will start with tutorials.

HCI International Conference series - new website

A new website has been lunched regarding the HCI International Conference series, founded by Prof. Gavriel Salvendy (Purdue University, USA, and Tsinghua University, P.R. China). The website hosts information about all eleven conferences that have taken place so far, starting from the 1st USA-Japan Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, which was held in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, 18-20 August 1984.
