HCII 2016: Keynote speech by Jennifer Preece

The opening plenary session, to be followed by the conference reception, will be held at the METROPOLITAN BALLROOM of The Westin Harbour Castle Hotel at 18:00, Tuesday 19 July.

The keynote address, entitled Citizen Science: New Research Challenges for Human Computer Interaction (HCI), will be given by Jennifer Preece, a Fellow of the ACM SIGCHI Academy and Professor and former Dean at the College of Information Studies – Maryland’s Information School. She is the author or coauthor of several leading HCI books including Interaction Design: Beyond Human Computer Interaction.

Her article, based on the conference keynote speech, has just been published in the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction and, courtesy of the publisher, Taylor and Francis, can be downloaded free of charge from

http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10447318.2016.1194153

Her keynote focuses on biodiversity citizen science and it challenges HCI researchers, practitioners, teachers, and students to lead the way in shaping a sustainable future. It includes inspirational applications that show how design excellence can change technology, raise awareness, and engage citizens to contribute by becoming “citizen scientists”. These challenges are advancing HCI theory and practice while contributing to saving the species with which we share our planet.

Abstract: Citizen science broadly describes citizen involvement in science. Citizen science has gained significant momentum in recent years, brought about by widespread availability of smartphones and other Internet and communications technologies (ICT) used for collecting and sharing data. Not only are more projects being launched and more members of the public participating, but more human–computer interaction (HCI) researchers are focusing on the design, development, and use of these tools. Together, citizen science and HCI researchers can leverage each other’s skills to speed up science, accelerate learning, and amplify society’s well-being globally as well as locally. The focus of this article is on HCI and biodiversity citizen science as seen primarily through the lens of research in the author’s laboratory. The article is framed around five topics: community, data, technology, design, and a call to save all species, including ourselves. The article ends with a research agenda that focuses on these areas and identifies productive ways for HCI specialists, science researchers, and citizens to collaborate. In a nutshell, while species are disappearing at an alarming rate, citizen scientists who document species’ distributions help to support conservation and educate the public. HCI researchers can empower citizen scientists to dramatically increase what they do and how they do it.

HCII 2016: Visa for Canada

The Government of Canada has recently introduced a new entry requirement, known as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) that applies to visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to or transiting Canada by air. (A visa-exempt foreign national is a person who is not a citizen of Canada and is not required to obtain a visa for the purpose of travel based on their country of nationality).

Effective March 15, 2016, visa-exempt foreign nationals must obtain an eTA before they can board a flight to Canada. To complete an application for an eTA, a passport, credit card and an email address is required. An eTA costs $7 CAD and is valid for up to five years. Among those exempted from this new requirement is U.S. citizens and travelers with a valid visa. Also, entry requirements for travelers arriving by land or sea have not changed.

To find out if a citizen of a country needs an eTA or how to apply for one, visit Government of Canada’s Electronic Travel Authorization at:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta.asp

There you can also check if you need a VISA to travel. In this case please make sure to submit your visa application well in advance, because usually this is a time consuming process.

https://www.pearsonhighered.com/program/Shneiderman-Designing-the-User-Interface-Strategies-for-Effective-Human-Computer-Interaction-6th-Edition/PGM327860.html

Overview: The Sixth Edition of Designing the User Interface provides a comprehensive, authoritative, and up-to-date introduction to the dynamic field of human-computer interaction (HCI) and user experience (UX) design. This classic book has defined and charted the astonishing evolution of user interfaces for three decades. Students and professionals learn practical principles and guidelines needed to develop high quality interface designs that users can understand, predict, and control. The book covers theoretical foundations and design processes such as expert reviews and usability testing.
By presenting current research and innovations in human-computer interaction, the authors strive to inspire students, guide designers, and provoke researchers to seek solutions that improve the experiences of novice and expert users, while achieving universal usability. The authors also provide balanced presentations on controversial topics such as augmented and virtual reality, voice and natural language interfaces, and information visualization.
Updates include current HCI design methods, new design examples, and totally revamped coverage of social media, search and voice interaction. Major revisions were made to EVERY chapter, changing almost every figure (170 new color figures) and substantially updating the references.
